Academic Overview

At Bergvliet Primary School, we are dedicated to providing a holistic education that nurtures and inspires extraordinary human beings. Our commitment to academic excellence is complemented by our philosophy as a “Thinking School of South Africa,” where we prioritise the development of critical thinking skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities in our students.

Our vision, “Holistic education that nurtures and inspires extraordinary human beings,” serves as the cornerstone of our academic philosophy. Grounded in this vision, we strive to create a learning environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, personal growth, and a sense of responsibility towards oneself and others.

Aligned with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) curriculum, our academic programs are enriched by our emphasis on thinking skills development. As a Thinking School of South Africa, we integrate various thinking frameworks and methodologies, including Habits of Mind, Thinking Hats, and Thinking Maps, into our teaching and learning practices.

Thinking Skills Integration:

  1. Habits of Mind: We cultivate habits of mind such as persistence, metacognition, and critical thinking, empowering students to approach challenges with resilience and adaptability. Through consistent practice and reflection, students develop the cognitive and emotional tools necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world.
  2. Thinking Hats: Utilising Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats methodology, we encourage students to explore issues from multiple perspectives, fostering creativity, collaboration, and effective decision-making. By wearing different “hats,” students learn to approach problems systematically, consider diverse viewpoints, and generate innovative solutions.
  3. Thinking Maps: Thinking Maps provide a visual framework for organising thoughts, analysing information, and making connections across different subject areas. By utilising various types of maps, such as Circle Maps, Flow Maps, and Double Bubble Maps, students enhance their analytical skills, improve comprehension, and communicate ideas more effectively.

Join us in our mission to inspire extraordinary human beings who will make a positive impact on society and shape a brighter future for generations to come.

Intermediate and Senior Phase Overview

Welcome to the Intermediate and Senior Phase at Bergvliet Primary School!

The Phase where changes are made and where the learners are exposed to new adventures within the teaching space.

The Intermediate Phase starts at Grade Four and ends at Grade Six and the Senior Phase starts at Grade Seven and ends at Grade Nine.

At the start of Grade Four the subjects increase and the expectation and demands become more intense.

Content Subjects like Natural Science, History and Geography are introduced and formalised tests are included in the assessment schedules, and the Grade Sevens are also exposed to Economic & Management Sciences which equip them to understand the needs of different communities and societies.

This allows for our learners to build their knowledge through exploration, research and engage in the wonderful world of technology in a responsible manner.

At Bergvliet Primary School, we are focused on providing holistic education, using the many resources we have at our disposal to enhance our children’s education and more importantly, we include the values of kindness, respect, responsibility, unity and teamwork, amongst others, to help our children become good, kind citizens of the world.

Lessons are approached in an innovative way, to allow the learners to use the skill of critical thinking to solve problems and navigate their way through their daily lives.

With our positive, nurturing and innovative approach, our aim is to ensure that our learners are not only well-prepared for High School, but also the ever-changing world out there.
