Academic Overview

At Bergvliet Primary School, we are dedicated to providing a holistic education that nurtures and inspires extraordinary human beings. Our commitment to academic excellence is complemented by our philosophy as a “Thinking School of South Africa,” where we prioritise the development of critical thinking skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities in our students.

Our vision, “Holistic education that nurtures and inspires extraordinary human beings,” serves as the cornerstone of our academic philosophy. Grounded in this vision, we strive to create a learning environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, personal growth, and a sense of responsibility towards oneself and others.

Aligned with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) curriculum, our academic programs are enriched by our emphasis on thinking skills development. As a Thinking School of South Africa, we integrate various thinking frameworks and methodologies, including Habits of Mind, Thinking Hats, and Thinking Maps, into our teaching and learning practices.

Thinking Skills Integration:

  1. Habits of Mind: We cultivate habits of mind such as persistence, metacognition, and critical thinking, empowering students to approach challenges with resilience and adaptability. Through consistent practice and reflection, students develop the cognitive and emotional tools necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world.
  2. Thinking Hats: Utilising Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats methodology, we encourage students to explore issues from multiple perspectives, fostering creativity, collaboration, and effective decision-making. By wearing different “hats,” students learn to approach problems systematically, consider diverse viewpoints, and generate innovative solutions.
  3. Thinking Maps: Thinking Maps provide a visual framework for organising thoughts, analysing information, and making connections across different subject areas. By utilising various types of maps, such as Circle Maps, Flow Maps, and Double Bubble Maps, students enhance their analytical skills, improve comprehension, and communicate ideas more effectively.

Join us in our mission to inspire extraordinary human beings who will make a positive impact on society and shape a brighter future for generations to come.
