Maths Competitions

Competition Mathematics is very important as it allows gifted learners extension and opportunities to excel further in the subject while developing critical thinking skills. All learners are exposed to non-routine problem-solving and develop their problem-solving abilities when preparing, practicing for and writing Math Olympiads. We are fortunate to participate in a few Math competitions annually.

HORIZON MATHS COMPETITION
The Horizon Maths Competition is a Western Cape education Department initiative and more than 15000 learners participate annually. Our Grade 5, 6 and 7 learners all have the opportunity to participate in the first round of this competition. Those who achieve 50% and above go through to the second round and then the top 100 learners are celebrated. EVery year, we have been fortunate in that we have had learners who have achieved this amazing feat and feature in the top 1% of Mathematicians in the Western Cape.

SPINE ROAD HIGH REGIONAL MATHS OLYMPIAD
The top 20 Mathematics learners In Grade Seven participate in the annual Spine Road Olympiad. The first round is an online paper. The top 100 learners then qualify to write the final round at Spine Road high. We generally achieve good results as we have won the individual and team competition for the last four years.

Ethan Stemmers and Mubeen Brey were just two learners who excelled during the Spine Road High Maths Competition 2022 where they placed third and first respectively and won the team cup as well. Ethan went on to excel in the Horizon Maths Competition where he placed in the top 50 of that competition.

The team of 2023 all placed in the top 5 learners of the individual competition. We also won the team competition. They are Tristan Muhirwa, Connor Goldman, Kaden Okkers, Kian Newman and James Gorrie

In 2024, we had six learners who achieved an aggregate over 80%. THey are Hamzah Darries, Tariq Brey, Taytum Keet, Elijah Halls, Connor Ross Harkness and Logan Peters. Three learners placed in the top 2 positions for the individual competition. Taytum and Hamzah were joint second and Elijah took top honours. We also won the team competition for the fifth successive year.

SOUTH AFRICAN MATHS CHALLENGE

The South African Math Challenge is a national competition organised by the South African Maths Foundation. Grade 4 to 7 learners are invited to participate in this competition. There are 3 rounds of this competition. The first round is held at school. Those learners who achieve 50% and above are able to compete in the second round and the top 300-400 learners end up writing the final round. This is a very challenging competition and we have always had learners reach the second round but fall short of competing in the final round. However, it is a great challenge and we aspire to see our learners compete in the final round.

KANGAROO MATHS COMPETITION

This is a new competition that we are participating in. This competition is considered the largest competition in the world, offering a fun and interactive platform for learners to test their mathematical skills. There is only one round and the South African leg of the competition is administered by the South African Mathematics Foundation. The competition is free and open to Grade 3 to 7 learners. We look forward to doing this competition at the start of the third term.
