At Bergvliet Primary School, we are proud to be part of the Thinking Schools of South Africa (TSSA) network, dedicated to cultivating a culture of thinking and lifelong learning. TSSA’s frameworks and methodologies are seamlessly integrated into our daily teaching practices, ensuring that critical thinking and problem-solving skills are embedded in every aspect of our students’ educational journey.
In the classroom, our teachers employ a variety of TSSA strategies such as Habits of Mind, Thinking Hats, and Thinking Maps to enhance cognitive development and foster independent thinking. Habits of Mind like perseverance, managing impulsivity, and striving for accuracy are emphasized to help students develop the resilience and determination needed to overcome challenges. Thinking Hats encourage students to view problems from multiple perspectives, fostering creativity and collaborative problem-solving. Thinking Maps provide visual tools that help students organize their thoughts, analyze information, and make meaningful connections across subjects.
Beyond the classroom, TSSA principles are woven into the fabric of school life. In sports, for instance, the habit of perseverance is actively promoted. Students learn the importance of setting goals, maintaining a positive mindset, and pushing through obstacles, which are essential qualities both on the sports field and in everyday life. Teamwork and strategic thinking are also nurtured, helping students understand the value of collaboration and planning.
In cultural and extracurricular activities, TSSA’s influence is evident as well. Students engage in reflective practices and creative thinking exercises that enhance their artistic and cultural appreciation. They are encouraged to think deeply about their actions and their impact on the community, fostering a sense of responsibility and global citizenship.
By incorporating TSSA methodologies throughout our school, we create a dynamic learning environment where students are equipped with the tools to think critically, act thoughtfully, and approach life’s challenges with confidence and ingenuity. At Bergvliet Primary School, thinking is not just an academic exercise but a holistic approach that prepares our students to thrive in all areas of life.
