Eco Club

  • Why is an Eco club important
  • Our Eco Club Mission Statement
  • Important environmental issues such as pollution, climate change and conservation. Early education on these topics can foster a lifelong respect for the environment
  • Participating in an environmental club can instill a sense of responsibility and stewardship in learners, encouraging them to take care of their surroundings and understand their impact on the planet.
  • Our club is involved in many practical activities such as recycling and reusing projects, gardening and clean up campaigns, providing hands-on learning experience that can complement classroom education.
  • Our club helps with connecting the school to the local community through joint projects such as neighbourhood cleanups and tree planting events, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
  • Being part of the Eco Club, learners develop essential skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication and project management.
  • Outdoor activities, such as gardening and cleanups help to promote a healthy lifestyle providing a sense of achievement.
  • Environmental projects often require creative thinking and problem solving skills, helping learners to think innovatively and develop solutions to real world problems.
  • The Eco Club enhances the school curriculum by providing practical applications of science, geography and social study lessons.
  • It empowers the learners to believe that they can make a difference, cultivating a proactive attitude towards tackling environmental issues.
  • The club promotes sustainable practices within the school such as recycling, energy and water conservation, as well as waste reduction initiatives.
  • We encourage environmental consciousness which contributes to a positive and inclusive school culture where learners feel proud of their contribution to a greener planet.
Our objective is to develop a love and respect for our environment. To educate others within our school and broader community about protecting our environment. This we will do by developing hands-on activities and share information learned through displays, assemblies and updating our school webpage. To improve ecological awareness, plastic recycling, care for animals and water and energy conservation. We promise to uphold and live this code to the best of our ability.

Our Eco Garden:

In 2019, Mrs. Van Niekerk and a dedicated team of volunteers embarked on a transformative project to turn an empty space at Bergvliet Primary School into a dynamic eco garden. Their vision was to create a functional learning environment where students could engage in hands-on educational activities and enjoy outdoor experiences.

Old tires were repurposed and painted, adding both practicality and a splash of color to the garden. Generous donations of garden benches, pots, and wooden planters further enhanced the space. The ground staff played a crucial role by constructing a path with eco bricks and concrete slabs, which improved accessibility and incorporated sustainable practices. A painted post and a farewell plaque were installed to honour the previous principal and mark the official opening of the garden. Later, a fence was added, adorned with the school’s values, to enclose and protect the space.

Today, the eco garden stands as a vibrant, multifunctional area that not only beautifies the school grounds but also serves as a valuable educational resource, providing students with an engaging and practical environment to explore environmental stewardship and sustainability.
