In the appropriate
season, pupils may take part in cricket, mini-cricket,
tennis, swimming, hockey, soccer and netball.
Children compete with different schools. There are also
athletics and sports competitions between the three
sports houses: Eksteen (red), Hertzog (blue) and Jeffcoat
(yellow) - named after the owners of Bergvliet Farm
on which the school is built. For these inter-house
competitions, learners may wear a plain T-shirt in the
colour of their house. All children from Reception Grade
to Grade Seven receive swimming coaching during school hours. No charge is levied for
any of these activities, as the expense is covered by
school fees. In addition, judo, tennis and
extra cricket and swimming coaching are provided by
outside professionals at a moderate fee.
Once a learner has committed himself / herself to play
a sport, it is compulsory to attend all practices punctually
and continue with the sport to the end of the season.
We see sport as a medium of education, a vehicle for
social interaction, for establishing relationships with
peers and staff, developing sound attitudes and acceptable
reactions to the disappointment of losing, accepting
unpopular decisions and being gracious in victory.
In the event of inclement weather, decisions
about the cancelling of practices and matches will only
be taken at 14:00 (12:45 on Thursdays and Fridays).
Please do not phone the office before this time.

It
is pleasant to succeed in what you strive to do,
but winning at all costs is not the test of true achievement.
Do not set the prize above the game -
There is no dishonour in defeat
What matters is that the game should be played in the
right spirit,
with fair play and no favour.
with every man playing as a member of the team,
the result accepted without conceit or bitterness. |
